And this is where the nightmares began, with swinging Goth carnival freakery running wild and crazy. ‘Rigamarole’ is early Gawf with r’,’r drum beats, and ‘Dark Little City’ has scary femme fatale cowboy lyrics. The instruments are so big they’re almost inside your skull, although the cymbals in ‘The Pear Song’ are at least discreet, out on loan from Nelson Riddle. It’s a vibrant and scary sound at times, then back to spooky quiet, with those words revolving in his throat.

That’s it you see. This has such vital characteristics because character is unavoidable, what with it being just Jeff in control and recording it all. Think lounge music where you wouldn’t dare lounge. Even when he sounds more relaxed and droll, as in ‘The Man With The Magic Pompadour’ you’d be stupid to trust him. He’s like a conspiratorial ringmaster who’d sell you down the line without a second thought, but he tells a mean story, so you’re suckered either way. ‘Zinnia’ is a harmless instrumental , but on bass and sparkling keyboard, which self-destructs when some awful drums start and then ‘The Niteshade’ is the sound of jazz played twangily on your intestines, with welcoming manic vocals, and an invitation to Do The Niteshade. (Think Cramps in a psychiatric unit.) “Dress up, to be dressed down.” We then close with wretchedly self-pitying rock and roll oaf howling, which is initially quite grotty but it develops well, even though I don’t think it’s on the same level as the others.

Overall, it’s a fine record and the fearless among you will find much of this quite brilliant. If you haven’t already done so check out examples from the ‘2am’ EP, which is fantastic, when you visit his site.

I'd love to hear this LP, but have never heard of it before..sounds vaguely akin to The Tiger Lillies-one of my favorites.
