[Link] | THIS WINDOW MORGUE STUDIO DEMOS M4tr
Any theories on that red and white object? The floorboards give away that it must be quite large and Lynda and I wondered whether it was a cast iron staircase strut of some kind, although it looks like an Alice In Wonderland chess piece cruelly cast aside?
Anyway, see the number on the sleeve? Yes, this is a strictly limited release of 100 copies, of which I clearly have one and you can bet that Peter, Jake, Marni and Caroline who are on it have their copies, leaving just 95. That won’t leave you much time. Existing in the quasi indie twilight where melodic experimentation meets a Goth sensibility this is very attractive, as those of you familiar with Peter’s earlier This Window or Finish The Story work would expect. The thing is they’re inching nearer here to being a real band, where earlier This Window recordings often have an oblique artistic notoriety, of being well crafted ideas, and collisions of sounds, but here the songs take priority.
As the stony voice and slithering guitar move deliciously over the stark beat and disdainful bass ‘Where Is My Jesus’ creeps about imperiously and carries a chorus like a sodden flag. You’ll be hooked into its quicksand embrace quickly enough, then ‘Is It a Dream?’ is as mottled as it is muffled, but still cajoling in its inverted, knobbled manner, vocals fluttering, guitar like a basking shark in the doldrums. ‘You Have The Power’ sings back into moody indie intemperance, guitar chafing and rhythm almost invisible, forward propulsion mainly evident on the drumbeat and the guitar sweeping up any mess, and then we wander into the ticking star of the disc, ‘Avocets’ with its dimpled, sedate rhythm that is wonderfully imaginative yet so circumspect, and those bells! A direct tribute to ‘Wolves Of Worcestershire’ by The Dancing Did? Or just my brain rotting?
A returning ‘Salle De Bain’ floats by, gossamer thin, and we’re done. So, how good is it? It is exceptionally good and you can’t bank on these songs being on the next album, whenever that is, as there’ll probably a lot of material swimming around to pick from. You really don’t want to miss out on ‘Where Is My Jesus’ or ‘Avocets.’ And it’s only £2.95.

...some kind of iron fence post...? Its been painted to look like a mummy laying down if you look at it a certain way...
It is mummylike. It could be a fence post. I wondered if they'd got it from outside some old building or staircase being rennovated. It is an object of mystery.
I'm convinced its a cunningly disguised top post of a bannister rail. Post WW2. Possibly 1920's.
That's what I thought but ignored the word bannister and used strut instead because I felt it may be metal instead of wood. It would have to be an odd shape, mind. Like the stockiest bannister in the world.

Traditional barber's shops had a pole outside painted in that way (google 'barbers pole' images)
I thought barber pole also - with it fitted through the red square with the bore.
I know barber poles! That's not one.
With thanks for the review - an 'Art' radio station has offered us a live session (panic - not played 'really' live for years!)...the three of us will have to manage...maybe we need more personnel? Very impressed with the explanations of 'my pole' in you comments. Everybody was right. I've posted the original image and blurb here http://peter-bright.livejournal.com/2008/07/12/ . This was exhibited in 2002. |
