WAVES UNDER WATER
WINTER GARDEN
Demo

Mainly a duo of Angelica Segerbäck on graceful vocals with music provided by Johan Svärdshammar, Sweden’s Waves Under Water clearly have ideas to lift them out of any expected generic rut associated with the rather unexciting Electro tag. Dark Electro, by dint of it sorrowful traits, but essentially Electro Pop, because of the friendly intentions, Johan plays a bass with a sickle sometimes. It happens during the opening ‘Winter Garden’ although the effect fits in so well you’d think it was actually more synth work.

A lot of the Electro material is undemanding because as well as there being no real power in electronics when people have melodic intentions, unless prepared to push everything as the Industrial hybrids do, and as the melodies themselves often fall flat there’s little to recommend it as it ends up coming over as a soppy version of Techno. Waves Under Water hit the spot with their calmly catchy songs, the settings elegant and concise, the melody succulent and dreamy.

‘Thirsty’ takes the same approach but makes it a little moodier, and this actually accentuates the mournful nature and draws the atmosphere around them like a cloak.

Nimbly loosening up, ‘My Cup’ is chirpier, but the sounds grows tightly around the vocals, and despite being a short song you feel you’ve been pulled through quite a treacherous landscape, then it’s all over with the sensitive, soothing ‘I Am The Ocean’ which is quite simple but it’s drowsy motion leaves me becalmed and quietly impressed.

More would be very nice.
